I have hiked or walked all over the globe in order to get away from the world and in some cases to get closer to it. I have climbed mountains and walked miles on city streets in many countries and on several continents. Yet the trails I love the most are at Woodlands Conservancy. I am most comfortable among the cypress and the live oaks, the tupelo, the dogwood and the ash, with the migratory birds and the water birds, near the waterways and the loamy soil. This is home.
When I first moved back to Louisiana, specifically to New Orleans, I was thrilled to find this patch of woods so close to my house. Hiking these shaded trails has been a refuge and not just for me. Along the paths I meet people from all walks of life; mothers with strollers, elders, couples, students, people of all hues who enjoy proximity to nature, fresh air and exercise. Situated as it is with urban areas to the North, marshes to the South, close to the Gulf of Mexico, Woodlands is an island of valuable bottomland forest used by migratory birds to eat and rest before a long flight over the Gulf. It is habitat for countless indigenous plants and animals. For local school children it is a living science laboratory and during a hurricane or storm it is a windbreaker and a sponge absorbing moisture and often preventing flooding.
I am grateful to those who came before me with the foresight to preserve the important land that makes up Woodlands Conservancy. It is a privilege to include Woodlands in my will. In this way my life will touch the next generations who I hope will treasure and nurture this land that enriches and protects us now and into the future. “
